Methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEMC) is a multifunctional nonionic cellulose ether with excellent thickening, water retention, dispersing, emulsifying, and film-forming properties. It is widely used in construction, pharmaceuticals, food, and daily chemicals.
Main Functions and Effects:
Excellent Water Retention: In building materials (such as cement mortar, tile adhesive, and self-leveling flooring), HEMC significantly improves the water retention rate, exceeding 85% after 24 hours. It maintains high moisture content even under high temperature and sun exposure, effectively preventing cracking and delamination.
Enhanced Workability: As a highly efficient thickener and gelling agent, HEMC improves the cohesiveness and anti-sagging properties of construction materials. For example, in water-based coatings, it can achieve a single coat thickness of up to 200 μm and improve anti-sagging properties by 40%.
Enhanced Workability: As a highly efficient thickener and gelling agent, HEMC improves the cohesiveness and anti-sagging properties of construction materials.
Excellent Thermal Stability and Salt Resistance
Compared to methylcellulose (MC), HEMC has a higher gel temperature and stronger electrolyte compatibility, maintaining viscosity stability even in high-salt environments, making it suitable for complex systems such as oilfield drilling fluids.
Emulsifying and Dispersing Functions
Due to its surface-active properties, it can be used as an emulsifier, dispersant, and colloidal protectant, widely applied in products such as printing inks, cosmetics, and toothpaste to improve system stability.
Pharmaceutical and Food Applications
HEMC is non-toxic, non-irritating, and metabolically inert, and is GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) certified. It can be used as a sustained-release excipient in oral tablets and suspensions, achieving a blood drug concentration fluctuation CV% ≤ 15% and sustained stable release for 12 hours; in ice cream, it can control ice crystal particle size < 15μm, significantly improving melt resistance.
Environmental Protection and Industrial Treatment: In wastewater treatment, it achieves a removal rate of 99.3% for hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺) and an adsorption capacity as high as 320 mg/g, demonstrating promising prospects for environmental applications.
