Methyl hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEMC) is a high-performance nonionic cellulose ether. Due to its excellent thickening, water retention, dispersing, emulsifying, and film-forming properties, it is widely used in construction, pharmaceuticals, food, daily chemicals, petroleum, and other fields.

Main uses explained:

Construction Materials: Improving Construction Performance and Stability
HEMC is a core additive in dry mortars, tile adhesives, putty powders, and self-leveling flooring. It significantly improves the water retention rate of materials (>85% after 24 hours), preventing cracking and blistering caused by early water loss; it also enhances cohesion, reduces slippage, and improves construction efficiency and project quality.

Coatings and Inks: Optimizing Rheological and Storage Properties
In water-based latex paints, HEMC provides excellent thickening and anti-sagging properties, achieving a single coat thickness of up to 200μm, and effectively preventing pigment settling. In printing inks, it acts as a dispersant and stabilizer, improving print clarity and product shelf life.

Pharmaceutical Preparations: Achieving Sustained Drug Release and Stabilization
HEMC is non-toxic and non-irritating, listed as a GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) substance, and commonly used as a sustained-release excipient in oral tablets and suspensions. It can control drug release for up to 12 hours, with minimal fluctuations in blood drug concentration, improving therapeutic safety.

Food Industry: Improving Texture and Melting Resistance
As a food additive, HEMC can be used in ice cream, jams, sauces, and other products, acting as a thickener, stabilizer, and melt-resistant agent. In ice cream, it effectively controls ice crystal growth (particle size < 15μm), improving texture and melting resistance.

Daily Chemical Products: Enhancing Product Texture and User Experience
Widely used in toothpaste, facial cleansers, shower gels, and cosmetics as a thickener, emulsifier, and moisturizer. Its pseudoplastic properties make products easy to extrude and apply, forming a thin, breathable film on the skin surface, enhancing skin feel and moisturizing effects.

Oil Drilling: High-Temperature and High-Salinity Environment Applications

HEMC possesses excellent thermal stability and salt resistance, maintaining stable viscosity even at 120℃ and high salinity. It is used for thickening drilling fluids, reducing filtration loss, and suspending cuttings, ensuring drilling safety under complex geological conditions.

Environmental Water Treatment: Highly Efficient Heavy Metal Removal

HEMC exhibits strong adsorption capacity for hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺) and other heavy metal ions, achieving a removal rate of up to 99.3% and an adsorption capacity as high as 320 mg/g, demonstrating promising application prospects in industrial wastewater treatment.
